Jordan will be the first Black majority owner of a full-time race team in NASCAR&#39;s premier series in 60 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EW5Qaj110C\">https:\/\/t.co\/EW5Qaj110C<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CNN (@CNN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNN\/status\/1308390629605605378?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 22, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The FBI investigated the incident as a possible hate crime but later announced it was hanging in the garage since last October well in advance of when Wallace was assigned to the garage, thus they were no longer pursuing federal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As racial injustice is being reckoned with in the states, Bubba Wallace, the only Black driver at NASCAR&#8217;s top tier, became known to many outside the sport this summer when members of his former racing team Richard Petty Motorsports found a noose hanging from a garage assigned to him at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Jordan is also the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets NBA franchise, and did not address that incident in his statement announcing the formation of the new NASCAR team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he did speak to the sport&#8217;s recent steps to make the sport more inclusive. &#8220;Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few Black owners,&#8221; Jordan<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/hornets\/mj-hamlin-wallace-nascar\"> <\/a>states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"942\" height=\"531\" src=\"https:\/\/goodbuzz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-3666-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodbuzz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-3666-1.png 942w, https:\/\/goodbuzz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-3666-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/goodbuzz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-3666-1-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/goodbuzz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-3666-1-696x392.png 696w, https:\/\/goodbuzz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-3666-1-745x420.png 745w, https:\/\/goodbuzz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Screenshot-3666-1-600x338.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 942px) 100vw, 942px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, NASCAR bans the confederate flag at all of their official NASCAR events and properties, which Bubba Wallace had been wanting for them to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The timing seemed perfect as NASCAR is evolving and embracing social change more and more with a recent commitment and donations I have made to combat systemic racism, I see this as a chance to educate a new audience and open more opportunities for Black people in racing&#8221; said Jordan at a press conference last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denny Hamlin, who will serve as minority partner, said the choice of who would drive for the team was a no-brainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tonight, I\u2019m excited to announce MJ and I are starting a new, single car <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASCAR?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NASCAR<\/a> Cup Series team for 2021.
